BROADCAST #70

TITLE & NUMBER OF THE BROADCAST:

INDIE-RE #70 BY CIVIL RADIO, BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE CONTENT:

In the Hungarian edition of the Indiere Radio Show, the two hosts Ákos Cserháti and Dániel Kemény will present a selection of the last few months’ releases. The show will start with some lighter rock songs, followed by a short break into electronic music, and then we’ll arrive at Hungarian modern jazz – downtempo – alt-pop songs.

TEXTS

Huhh, that was the Palace band in the last few minutes, and it was the title track from their new album, Lavina. We’ll bring you another song from them in a moment, named after Madách Square in Budapest. This square is practically in the middle of Budapest, with lots of pubs, a theatre and even a synagogue. The band members say that they try to explore common issues in their songs. As they said, the songs on their album Lavina were created to show the insecurities of everyday life in the year 2023 and to give an authentic picture of the situation and problems of today’s young generation.

In the sequel, we present an almost banned song. It happened that Carson Coma wrote a song criticizing the political system in Hungary in some places, in which they also mentioned the name of the Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The band has also performed regularly at teacher and student demonstrations in Budapest in recent months. Then some very interesting things started to happen.

The band was invited to perform at the government-run Liszt Ferenc Institute in Brussels, but when the song was released, the organiser suddenly cancelled the concert – 1 week before the performance. In recent years, the media situation in Hungary has also not been too great – As a community radio station, we don’t have too much left to lose, so we’re going to play you this song called: Feldobom a követ – ‘I’m dropping the stone’.

Next up is an almost forgotten Hungarian band who have given us a little surprise after a 7 year break. Out of nowhere, the guys have released two new songs on streaming platforms. An interview reveals that the band simply forgot to post these songs, but now they found them by accident and decided to publish them. Next up is their track «Hatos – Six».

The sequel also features a returning band who have started working again to celebrate their 40th anniversary and released another new song a few weeks ago. We’ve already played two songs from them in the previous edition of the Indiere Radio Show, but now we’ve got a fresh release: ‘ Köszi a halakat – Thanks for the fish.’ And if you want to listen to their previous two tracks, check back to our last show on indiere.eu!

In the follow-up we have The Pontiac, who have released another Hungarian-language album after a year and a half. The time between the two albums was extremely short, and the new songs were born out of the sad events in the life of frontman Barni Nagy. These songs are part of a process of letting go and form a unity that made them feel like they needed to be released on one album. From this very personal album, we now present the track From My Window.

It’s probably the good weather, but we have another returning band. They’re Carbonfools, who have become known in the underground electronic music scene for their very special, experimental stuff. It’s been a few years and they haven’t released much new music, but now they’ve released a surprise single, and here’s the song Lost in My Mind.

Now let’s take the artist who, a few years ago, only made videos on YouTube about social problems and mystical events, then started making music as a hobby and within 1-2 years became the most listened to Hungarian artist – at least according to recent streaming data. This is Azahriah, who is also going on a European tour in November. The interest is so great that the band has announced that several shows have had to be moved to larger locations to make space for all fans. Azahriah has also recorded his first song with a foreign artist, so now it’s Azahriah, Sam Martin, and StadiumX with Heaven.

Coming up next is a very multi-talented artist who can be found doing practically anything from Twitch streaming to songwriting. Mimi Kőrös, aka Saya Noé, spent most of her childhood with her parents in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. After a long search for her musical path, she became a true DIY artist, who not only writes the melodies and lyrics, but also produces and records the songs herself. Her first album was released in December 2020 and was nominated for the so-called Hungarian Grammy Award, Fonogram. Her latest single «In Motion» was released a few weeks ago.

On the day of her graduation, Blansch released her latest album, and the next three songs will be from her here on the Hungarian edition of the Indiere Radio Show. The album is called «Szárnypróba – Wing Test» and the artist says she composed all the material in her living room at home. In an interview, Blansch said that the album is about growing up, love, fears, frustration and of course, living freedom. Here are the first two tracks from the new album. First comes «a song torn apart», then «Szárnypróba – Wing Test».

We can’t resist showing you another song by Blansch. The next track is a collaboration with Whoel, who has mainly worked in styles like riddim. So here’s the song they did together, «It’s easier at night».

INTERVIEW

We’ll stop here for a moment, because we decided that it would be a good idea to ask a music journalist about the current state of Hungarian music, since we were able to show such good emerging artists. Music expert Dávid Sajó said:

There’s definitely a renaissance in Hungarian music, it’s only in the last few years that a Hungarian group has started to be able to play in front of 10-13 thousand people. The most interesting thing is that these bands are not mainstream, but often very underground, and they are able to attract so many people. In Hungary, there are 20-30 bands that can easily put on a sold-out concert in a venue with a capacity of 10,000 people. What is very interesting is that these larger concert halls in Budapest, for example, are starting to be cautious with foreign performers, and recently, for example, a big foreign band gave a concert for 5,000 people in Budapest Park, which seats 10,000. Many people ask what the reason for this might be. I think it is because, on the one hand, social media leads to a much more direct contact between bands and fans, for example, and that is very useful. On the other hand, the trend of everyone chasing the illusion that they sing in English because they want to make it abroad has gone. It’s hard for the audience to identify with that. Bands have noticed this, they have started singing in Hungarian, and this has started a very good process.

It’s good to hear that, so now we can promise that the next Hungarian edition of Indiere will have some good new music.

In the follow-up there is an interesting song, with an interesting music video. In the clip, frontman Bence Száraz dives into icy water for 4 minutes and performs the song. According to him, he did the whole thing just for the experience. In an interview he explained that it was obviously a serious physical challenge and the recording was not without danger. But I have always liked to take risks for the creation and I have always been attracted by the real experience of the process. Next up is the Úrfi formation, and the song «Öngyilkos bálnák – Suicide Whales».

Nani on the Run has released a new song, Running River, which focuses on the rapid passage of time, and the music video features dreamlike scenes. In the continuation, we present it on the Hungarian edition of the Indiere Radio Show. Nani on the Run’s full-length album is scheduled to arrive in August, so maybe we’ll be able to feature the other songs in the next Hungarian edition.

We say goodbye to one of the regular performers at Hungarian underground festivals, the Flanger Kids, with their latest song «No more answers». In the last hour, you have been listening to the Hungarian edition of the Indiere Radio Show, produced by Civil Radio. The shows are broadcasted in Spain, Austria, Germany, France, Slovenia, Croatia, Ireland and Hungary by many many community radios. Now Dániel Kemény and Ákos Cserháti say goodbye. Follow Indiere – week by week on your favourite community radio stations. Next week you can listen to Radio Helsinki’s broadcast from Graz. That’s all from Hungary for now, we hope to see you next time again, a viszonthallásra!
