BROADCAST #62

TITLE & NUMBER OF THE BROADCAST:

INDIE-RE #62 BY CIVIL RADIO, BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE CONTENT:

In the Hungarian edition of the Indiere Radio Show, the two hosts Ákos Cserháti and Dániel Kemény will present a selection of the last few months’ releases. The show will start with some lighter rock songs, followed by a short break into electronic music, and then we’ll arrive at Hungarian modern jazz songs.

In the next few minutes, we are going to feature a band that we already introduced in a previous Hungarian edition of the Indiere Radio Show. Fortunately, they gave us another reason to show you something from them, because they recently released a new album. They are the band Galaxisok, a very popular band in the underground music scene in Hungary. Interestingly, according to their Bandcamp page they have released 21 albums so far. The first couple of albums were called «Pirate Recordings», which included songs recorded on dictaphone and concert recordings. Luckily they can now afford a studio, so the new track sounds pretty good. Coming up next is «Tánc» from them, which just simply means «dance» in English.

There is a saying in music circles in Hungary that «a music critic is the best musician». There is some irony in this, of course, but in the sequel we have the chance to check if this is true. Our next artist is Róbert Németh, who works as a music journalist in his civil life and also makes music as a kind of hobby project. He has released 3 albums so far, the last one not so long ago, so we have two tracks from that. First up is «Ha volna még szívem – If I Only Had a Heart», then we play «Egy mozi a világ végén – A Cinema at the End of the World».

We move on to something a little more electronic, with a joint track by Margaret Island and JumoDaddy called Torn Down On Me. We’ve already talked about Margaret Island in a previous episode, but not about JumoDaddy. He’s the artist who – in Hungary – appears in some way in all music. His real name by the way, is Gáspár Horváth, a founding member of another highly successful band, Irie Maffia. He is also a great experimenter in all progressive electronic music styles, he is also known as a keyboard player and songwriter, and he has released several remixes and an album of his own.

Now a special world music project is being presented on the Hungarian edition of the Indiere Radio Show. The band Duckshell was founded by young people with Brazilian, Szekler and Gypsy roots in a pub called «Gólya» in Budapest. They have toured the clubs and festivals of Hungary and played for French, German, Polish and Turkish audiences. The band has released two albums so far, but recently they came out with a single with a new song on it, which we will show you in the next few minutes.

Coming up next is The Subtones, who have just won the Fonogram Award for Jazz Album of the Year – basically the Hungarian Grammy Award – for their latest album. The band’s singer Flora Kiss and trumpet player Gábor Subicz didn’t really fall over themselves. As they said:

«We really appreciate the recognition, but that’s not basically why we work. We are proud of the professional level of the band, but we prefer to concentrate on the work.»

«Of course, any professional recognition is nice and we are grateful for it, but we have never really been concerned with awards. It happened this time: the label nominated our record for the award, we were very grateful, and then we got so busy that we forgot about it, and we were a bit surprised when we got the call saying «you guys got an award anyway, you should come and get it».

«We received a lot of critics about the fact that our music is not really jazz. We don’t think that we should necessarily deal with such categories, we can’t clearly classify our music into a musical style ourselves, but maybe if you look at the state of modern pop music today, these songs should be classified as jazz and not pop. Anyway, there’s only one thing that matters to think about: there’s good music and bad music – that’s all you have to deal with.

«Basically, it’s very difficult to define what makes a music a jazz music. If you ask different nations around the world, everyone would probably define the style a little differently. We don’t really care about that definition. What we do know is that when we’re planning the structure of songs, for example, we always try to improvise. For example, there’s no fixed sound for the instruments: on stage we always try to recreate our songs a little bit. As a trumpet player, I always try to create unexpected situations when I’m playing, and then the others can solve them with their instruments – I don’t have to deal with that.

We’re not going to take a stand in this genre debate, but instead we’re going to play you the song from the Hungarian Jazz Album of the Year, «You are the calm in the minute», which in English just means «You are the calm in the minute».

In the following, we move a little again towards world music styles. The Pannonia Allstars Ska Orchestra and Viktor Rice have set out on a special mission for their latest joint album. Their aim is to combine Hungarian traditional folk music with Ska and Reggae elements. The Pannonia Allstars Ska Orchestra was founded in Budapest in 2003 and since then they have released at least two dozen albums. Now it’s time for their latest record «Sej Búza». The song was first recorded sometime between 1974 and 1980 in the village of Körösszegapáti in Hajdú-Bihar County. A new version of it is now played here on the Indiere Radio Show.

We continue with Rozina Pátkai, a singer, songwriter and visual artist. The singer’s recently released album features poems by Hungarian writer and poet Sándor Petőfi. He is one of the best known and most prominent figures in Hungarian poetry. During his short life, he wrote nearly a thousand poems in Hungarian, of which about eight hundred and fifty have been handed down to posterity, and the better known have been translated into many other languages. Rozina Pátkai has produced a very colourful album of these poems. On the album there is a place for every style from jazz to the hardest rock music. In the next few minutes we invite the listener on a little psychedelic journey, the song and the poem is called Szőlőszem – Grape Eye.

Next up is the band New Fossils. They are a relatively new band, recently formed, and the members met through a music competition. Interestingly, although they are new, they have played several concerts abroad, for example in Germany. They have just released their first album, which has some really great soul and jazz beats for the audience.  Now they have a new song called Reflections.

In the next couple of minutes, the band «Amoeba» will play. Amoeba was a pre-existing experimental music project in Hungary, but now the band has undergone a change of members and to celebrate this they have already released a new album. On the album, the guys have replaced the former funky- groove jazz sound with future-groovemaster-neosoul rhythms, but if you listen carefully, you can even discover a lo-fi style in the songs sometimes. Now we have the song Breakfast of Champions.
