IndieRE #94 by Civil Radio, Budapest, Hungary

We couldn’t wait for the Indiere Radio Show to come back with a fresh Hungarian edition, because the Hungarian artists didn’t rest at the end of the year. Actually! We could hardly resist to choose between the fresh releases. The 94th edition of Indiere offers recordings from, among others, the band Qualitons, who are back after their break-up. We’ll also choose from recent releases by Samurai Drive and 30Y, and at the end of the show we’ll dedicate a special block to the Hungarian drum and bass and breakbeat culture, featuring a recent song by MC Fedora. Listen to the show all over Europe on your favourite community radio station!

SCRIPT

Happy new year Indiere people – boldog újévet! This is the new episode of the Indiere Radio Show – The shows are broadcasted in Spain, Austria, Germany, France, Slovenia, Croatia, Ireland and Hungary by many many community radios. The whole project is realized by the support of the European Union. This week we’re broadcasting from Hungary. My name is Daniel, I’m Ákos, and today we’ve tried to collect some of the most interesting releases of the last few weeks. Enjoy!

We started the Hungarian edition of the Indiere Radio Show with one of Nóvé Soma’s musical projects, Samurai Drive, who played the song Remedy. We continue with a song from 30Y, one of the iconic bands of the Hungarian underground scene. The band hasn’t released a full-length album in 3 years, but in early December they released a surprise record. From this fresh release, here’s the track – Arra indulok el – I’m going that way.

A few days ago, the Mehringer band, who we have already talked about in previous programmes, released a new single. Now we thought we would briefly interview the band’s frontman, Marci Mehringer.

When we were thinking about the title of the album, we always ended up with number 13 for some reason. But recently we had a car accident with the band. That event is very much a part of our everyday life now. The accident happened at mile marker 111, and because it became our new unlucky number, we named the newly released album after it. We also have a lot of goals for the future: in 5 years time, for example, we would like to see the band as a headlining band, which would be great for everyone, but especially for us, because then we wouldn’t have to go to work at 8am and we could even leave university. Of course the band would like to play big concerts, but what I’ve realised over the last year and a half is that we have so many experiences playing music that it’s probably more important than anything else.

So now here’s Mehringer Band, and their fresh song, Where I could run to?

In the next few minutes, we introduce the Lazar brothers. Domonkos Lázár and Ágoston Lázár are very multi-talented musicians, members of several underground bands. Their concerts and songs are dominated by acoustic, melancholic, minimal instrumentation. The brothers started to play music independently in 2018, and they named their project Lázár Tesók. Now they have a new release called “A végén úgyis” – «In the end anyway».

Last spring, the Qualitons announced their breakup. They were the band whose concert even the Red Hot Chili Peppers musicians looked down from their hotel room, and they were also the first band from Hungary to play on KEXP Radio in the United States. Yet, with the pandemic greatly disrupting their prospects, they thought it best to disband in 2022. However, they still got together to play music, and the members realised during their jamming sessions that they existed more as a creative community than as a strict band. By their own admission, they have written enough songs for two albums since the split. Now they have recently announced their return and have already shown the public two new songs from this active period. Next up is their song Ocean.

A band formed in the summer of 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic, will be featured in the next few minutes here on the Hungarian edition of the Indiere Radio Show. The band’s name is «Hűvös», and their first album was released in April 2023 under the title MIT KERESEK ITT?? – What am I doing here? Now they closed the year with a single, here is the song “Rendezői változat” – «Director’s Cut».

We continue with a super indie, alternative rock band in the next few minutes. We’ve already recommended the band Kolibri in the last Hungarian edition of the Indiere Radio Show, and now they’ve released another new track. The song is called “Bezárul” – «Closing», which again brings the usual sound of Kolibri: psychedelic elements and a very special sound.

By the end of 2023, Solére’s latest music video and music track «I’ll find it» was released, and is already a preview of her next album. Zsófi Szigeti is a multi-talented musician, always doing something, currently she is the face and ambassador of Spotify’s women’s equality campaign in Hungary. Solé’s full-length album will have to wait until spring, but in the meantime here’s her track «Megtalálom».

In the sequel, we’re going to take you a bit further into more electronic waters, because we have plenty of that style to show you.For example, here’s some music by Réka B. Nagy and Toldyouuso, released at the beginning of December, which we stumbled across while surfing Soundcloud. The song is called «My Heart», which has a very special melody in its sound, and we’ll listen to it in the next few minutes.

Few people know it, but Hungary and Hungarian artists are also very strong in the world of breakbeat songs. As the show is coming to an end, we now give you a little insight into the world of Hungarian drum and bass culture. A few weeks ago Fedora released a new song together with Dj Titus. Fedora is a super bass music MC, you should listen to her other recordings. Here’s his latest single ‘Soul is Heavy’, which is supported by a video which Fedora shot with a phone during her travels and performances abroad in the last few years.

Hungarian drum and bass recordings often draw inspiration from folk music recordings. This is also true for the following band called «Interurbán». Their song «Hegyek» (Mountains) is based on a folk song discovered in the town of Gyula in 1906, called » Elindultam szép hazámból» (I left my beautiful homeland). To this Interurbán have added a background with a broken rhythm, which in the end we think sounds really good. Let’s listen to it now.

In the sequel, Saya Noé arrives. She is the artist we have talked about a lot in previous Hungarian editions of the Indiere Radio Show. She is a singer, songwriter and even has her own Twitch channel. And on top of that, she’s constantly bringing us new releases. Her latest one is also very well done, here is the song called «Jupiter».

At the end of the show, we take a little trip into free-jazz. Hari Drama released a very special song a few weeks ago. Hari_drama defines itself as a free-art collective, and countless musicians have turned up in the group’s various line-ups. They are constantly experimenting, and the result of this constant experimentation is the song Atlantis.

In the last hour, you have been listening to the Hungarian edition of the Indiere Radio Show, produced by Civil Radio. The shows are broadcasted in Spain, Austria, Germany, France, Slovenia, Croatia, Ireland and Hungary by many many community radios. Now Dániel Kemény and Ákos Cserháti say goodbye. Follow Indiere – week by week on your favourite community radio stations. Next week you can listen to Radio Helsinki’s broadcast from Graz. That’s all from Hungary for now, we hope to see you next time again, a viszonthallásra!

FEATURED SONG #94

TITLE:

INDR FEATURED SONG #94: Magashegyi Underground – Egymáshoz rövid az út

TEXT FROM THE FEATURED SONG (SAME AS THE JINGLE TEXT):
Coming up next is the Featured Song from Hungary. We feature a band who have won the Hungarian Grammy, Fonogram Award several times. They are the band Magashegyi Underground, who have just released a new song called “Egymáshoz rövid az út” – «The road to each other is short».
TEXT:
After seven years, the band “Magashegyi Underground” released a new album in December this year. The album, called “Egymáshoz rövid az út” – «The road to each other is short», is a return to the band’s classic sound. The songs are collaborative compositions, with everyone putting in their own ideas, and many of the songs composed spontaneously during the recording process. This is a return to the band’s original creative method.
