BROADCASTS

TITLE & NUMBER OF THE BROADCAST:

INDIE-RE #98 BY RADIO CORAX, HALLE (SAALE)

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE CONTENT:

In this IndieRE broadcast, Luise and Lena from Radio Corax explore the local and regional jazz music scene. Therefore, they invited Albrecht Brandt who is one of the founder of the »Jazz Kollektiv«, a collective that organizes Jazz concerts in Halle regularly. At the same time, he creates Jazz compositions himself and plays the upright bass in his own jazz project »Brandt«. Apart from the regional Jazz scene, they look at current releases from artists such as »toechter« – a band that introduces string instruments into pop music. As always, there is one song picked for our special category »FESCH« – a song in german language that is not yet mainstream but quite famous. This time it comes from the duo »AUGN« – also known as the german Sleaford Mods – and it is called »PIEP«.

TEXT:

This IndieRE broadcast from Radio Corax in Halle (Saale), Germany, is a bit different: Although usually we take a look at the local punk scene, this time we have a look at the local and regional Jazz scene. What is happening in Halle, Leipzig or Berlin jazz-wise? As an expert we invited Albrecht Brandt, founder of the Halle based »Jazz collective« and composer and bass player in his septet »Brandt«. He tells us about his upcoming in making music – starting as a bass player in a punk band – to studying composing in Leipzig. He also talks about the professionalization in jazz music – how come most of the people in jazz went to university nowadays? Does Jazz look different nowadays compared to the time of the GDR? Why are there so many more guys than girls in jazz? How do you behave at a jazz concert? Albrecht Brandt gives answers to these questions and talks about the network of Jazz players and concert organizers throughout the east of Germany.

Apart from that, we listen to Max Andrzejewski – »one of the most important protagonists of the young German experimental music« as it says on his bandcamp. As a composer and drummer, he has worked with several musicians. On February 6th, 2024, »Songs of Wounding« has been released, an album made by him and the Ukrainian singer Mariana Sadovska as well as the Trio Kurbasy and Ensemble.

Another brand new release comes from the Berlin based trio »toechter« that consists of two violinists and a cello player. They pair string instruments with synth sounds and soft vocals for a dreamy vibe and an experimental character in Indie-Pop.

In our category »Fesch«, we have a look at the so-called »German Sleaford Mods«, AUGN. With only bass guitar, simple beats and funny lyrics, they seem to make a parody of todays pop music and culture when really some of their observations of our society are quite fitting and sharp.

FEATURED SONG #98

TITLE: toechter – Me she said

TEXT FROM THE FEATURED SONG:

Toechter, in english: daughters, is an all-female group, based in Berlin, consisting of Marie-Claire Schlameus (cellist, composer), Lisa Marie Vogel (violinist, composer) and the danish Katrine Grarup Elbo (violinist, composer).

Toechter set foot on the musical landscape with their debut album ‘Zephyr’ in 2022. Using string instruments such as the violin, viola and cello, they are not what usually exists in pop music nowadays.

Their second album is called Epic Wonders and just came out on the 2nd of February on the Berlin based label Morr music that exists for a while now and is known for an international mixture of bands and projects of distinguished and ambitious musicians.

You can listen to Epic Wonders not only on your computer or smartphone but in full effect on vinyl or the good old compact disc.

According to toechter, »Epic Wonder« is all about making connections. Connections between people, animals, plants, fungi, rocks, soils, oceans, ice caps, stars, and planets.
